Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - Participation by Region

Albertans are known to be hard workers, and the improving economy is generally making it easier to find work. But the degree to which individuals are connected to the work world outside the home varies—not only by region of the country, but also within the province.

The participation rate is one of the main economic indicators tracked by Statistics Canada in the monthly Labour Force Survey. It estimates the number of people over the age of 15 that are either working, or are looking for work. In other words, they are participating in the work force.

Of the provinces, Alberta has by far the highest participation rate at 72.6%. That compares with a national average rate of only 67.0% (figures are for April 2011).

Not surprisingly, the highest rate in Alberta is found in the Wood Buffalo/Cold Lake region. The draw of the oilsands and heavy oil keeps workers busy in that region. The Banff/Jasper/Rocky Mountain House region is also very high at 78.3%. Calgary (72.9%) and Edmonton (72.3%) both come in quite close to the provincial average.

The only region in Alberta to post a participation rate below the national average is the Lethbridge/ Medicine Hat region, with a rate of 66.7%. This could be driven by a higher percentage of the population either retired, in university or college, or opting to stay home and raise children.
