Monday, November 14, 2011 - Leaving on a Jet Plane

Despite a lot of turbulence in the economy over the past three years, air traffic at Alberta’s three major airports has been remarkably calm.

According to Statistics Canada data, Calgary’s International Airport saw 20,854 planes depart in September of 2011. That is very close to the three-year monthly average of 19,614. Calgary was Canada’s third-busiest airport in September, beating out Montreal’s Trudeau Airport (but trailing distantly Toronto’s Pearson Airport and the Vancouver International Airport).

Coming in at a bit more than half of Calgary is Edmonton’s International Airport, with a monthly average of 10,909 aircrafts over the past three years. Traffic at both of Alberta’s largest airports has been steady over the past three years, apparently unaffected by the economic downturn in 2009. (However, the data show only aircraft movements, and not the number of passengers deplaned. That statistic may show a slightly different trend.)

The third-busiest airport in Alberta is Fort McMurray, with an average of 5,047 airplanes per month. But while Fort McMurray trails Edmonton and Calgary, per capita aircraft movements are much greater.  However, traffic at the Fort McMurray airport is much more seasonal, peaking in early summer. This is no doubt driven by a rising working population and activity in the oilsands.*
